Buyer’s remorse for online shopping affects 74% of Americans, according to a survey commissioned by Slickdeals

LOS ANGELES, March 28, 2022 /PRNewswire/ — Seventy-four percent of American adults have felt remorse after purchasing items online, according to a new survey commissioned by Slickdeals, the only shopping platform powered by millions of avid shoppers.

The survey of 2,000 Americans, conducted by OnePoll on behalf of Slickdeals, found that common regrets include feeling the item purchased was less valuable than expected (39%), not using it as often than expected (34%) and spending too much money in the first place (32%).

Many respondents attributed their shopping experience to good advertising (43%), cheap prices (43%) and the color of the product they like (42%).

The study found that 73% of people dislike up to 15 items they purchased. Shoppers also admitted to storing their unfortunate online purchases somewhere out of sight (45%). Others prefer to gift these items to someone they know (40%) or return/exchange them (39%).

What’s more, almost six in ten also admitted they shopped online while intoxicated, with 83% of drunk shoppers buying something “stupid or frivolous”.

“The convenience of being able to buy almost anything from the comfort of home is hard to beat, but there are some mistakes to avoid,” said Louie Patterson, head of personal finance for Slickdeals. “Always check shipping, return policies and fees before ordering. Also beware of hard-to-find items being sold online for more than MSRP. Some sellers are taking advantage of the temporary shortage by raising prices during the duration of the shortage.

In addition to regrets about the purchased items themselves, many were also disappointed with the shipping process. Sixty-three percent of respondents said they completely forgot they ordered something online until it showed up on their doorstep. More than half of Americans (56%) said they couldn’t remember what they ordered until they opened the package.

The survey results also revealed that the average person experienced five weeks of shipping delays between ordering something online and having it delivered.

Almost two in five respondents (38%) who experienced delays said it was due to out-of-stock items. The same percentage of people (38%) had an item misplaced during shipping and 36% had an item shipped to another location by accident.

Meanwhile, three out of five people said they had a package stolen during shipping.

Seventy-two percent of shoppers who experienced delivery delays said they didn’t mind it and thought the wait was usually worth it.

Patterson added, “Another benefit of shopping online is the easy access to researching products and prices before buying. Leveraging a community like ours with millions of shoppers helping shoppers is a great way to make sure you’re getting the best product at the best price.”
