TCGplayer, a well-known online marketplace where you can buy and sell trading cards, has been officially acquired by eBay for $295 million. The deal is expected to close in the first quarter of 2023, with eBay noting in its press release that the deal will help the company facilitate connections between buyers and sellers in the trading card space and “address enthusiasts all over the world”.
It makes sense for eBay to acquire TCGplayer as many users already buy and sell trading cards on eBay. The trading card space has also seen impressive growth since the pandemic began. In 2020, eBay reportedly saw a 142% increase in overall trading card sales over the previous year.
It was later predicted by eBay that the trajectory would continue at a similar pace from 2021, with the company promising at the time to “build on new ways to improve the eBay experience for buyers and sellers. , especially in the collectibles space”. It looks like acquiring TCGplayer will facilitate just that, with TCGplayer offering all manner of cards on its website, including Pokemon, Magic: The Gathering, Yu-Gi-Oh, Digimon, and more.
