Online Trading Academy Research Center Begins to Dispel Myths About Educated Traders and Investors

IRVINE, Calif.–(BUSINESS WIRE)–There is a growing tide of interest in the voice of retail traders and investors as an increasingly important and misunderstood segment of financial markets.

Having served over 80,000 students with continuing education in trading and investing, online trading academy is well placed to study the educated traders and investors sub-segment.

“The OTA Research Center gives our students a voice to speak up and be heard through research inquiries, information and shared insights,” said Mike Richardson, President of Online Trading Academy. He went on to say, “There are four factors contributing to how quickly we are launching our research center now. First, as has been widely reported, a large number of retail traders and novice investors are entering the financial markets through online trading platforms and smartphone apps. Second, there is a general lack of research on this increasingly important segment that is not well understood. Third, from the limited research available so far, it is unclear to what extent it may be skewed by a predominance of uneducated traders and investors over educated ones. Fourth, we are well positioned to seek out the educated retail traders and investors sub-segment helping them to have a voice to speak out.

For more than two decades, Online Trading Academy has been dedicated to leveling the playing field between Wall Street and Main Street. The great equalizer is education, but not all education is equal. Online Trading Academy has become a leader in educating retail traders and investors to develop their skills, develop their skills and build their confidence in trading and investing. More recently, Online Trading Academy is revolutionizing the learning journey for students, developed a one-of-a-kind all-in-one trading platform called CliK, integrating education, analysis and trading, integrating its rules , step-by-step methodology, education and approach focused on risk management.

The Research Center conducted an in-depth study of student attitudes and behaviors. “For us, it is absolutely essential to take the pulse of our students. We get tremendous insight into how our students are consuming our education. What works and what doesn’t. And, more importantly, how we are continually evolving our offering as markets change,” said Ted Francisco, vice president of Insights.

“In April 2021, we conducted a study with more than 1,200 [ML7] students who had completed OTA’s Basic Strategy class with a breakdown of students ranging from new to just a few months old to students who have been with the company for more than five years,” he added. “What’s interesting as a researcher is how our students’ insights differ from what we gather from media reports and public domain research from retail investors and traders. ” Students were not required to answer every question, but those who did provided key information:

  • Students report that prior to coming to OTA, the majority had little or no experience. 70% said they had no experience or were new to it.

  • 70% said they trade live on the market (OTA encourages new students to continue training in simulator mode), and 37% say they spend more than 6 hours a week doing so, in a range of asset classes, stocks, futures. , Forex and Options, with 83% saying they do not trade cryptocurrency.

  • Nearly 2/3 (64%) say they do not day trade (intraday). Nearly half (47%) say they do swing trading (a few days to a few weeks), and a further 17% say they do position trading and invest for the long term.

  • More than half report spending more than 4 hours per week in their education, with 20% reporting spending more than 10 hours per week, mostly spending that time in weekly online sessions with instructors and each other; 38% say they’ve been spending more time studying since COVID, but more than half (53%) say they still prefer in-person classes (OTA can’t wait to reopen its centers)

In particular, the survey deepened student confidence. “As an educator, the ultimate goal of Online Trading Academy is to help our students become more confident in investing and trading,” Francisco said. “It’s critical that we get a baseline and that we’re happy with what we’ve seen,” he added. After completing at least one basic course with OTA:

  • 81% of students said they felt better informed about how markets work

  • 76% said they were better informed about how to manage risk

  • 64% said they were more confident managing their money

  • Focusing on the key concepts of the Core Strategy methodology taught by Online Trading Academy, respondents indicated a weighted average score of 7.55/10 (75.5%) for understanding Core Strategy concepts and 7. 37/10 (73.7%) for their self-confidence. know where to place a stop loss; More importantly, 85% say they have created a trading plan (the Online Trading Academy’s Core Strategy methodology teaches this as the first step in risk management, which is the foundation of everything it teaches).

  • 69% said they would have liked to have started their studies earlier.

When asked why students felt they were achieving or not achieving their goals, the two most critical factors were ‘sticking to their rules’ and ‘managing their emotions’.

Francisco explained: “It’s not a surprise for us. We have created a continuous feedback loop with many of our students. We have created student panels and regularly conduct qualitative research. We know that students struggle with the emotional side of trading, so we place special emphasis on creating a trading plan, following the rules and steps with discipline, and learning the managing emotions. These key concepts are at the heart of our design of CliK, which is a unique all-in-one trading platform integrating education, analysis and trading.

“This type of data and information on educated retail traders and investors is invaluable in beginning to dispel some common myths about them, primarily that they primarily trade in the stock market, with simple buy strategies, of maintenance and hope, taking incalculable risks. These data are beginning to indicate otherwise, that the journey from novice to confidence comes from education, with sustained commitment, in a bespoke methodology that integrates management disciplines It has never been more timely for us to launch our Online Trading Academy research center and we will rapidly intensify our research investigations and insights and share our insights. And most importantly, as we continue to develop and deploy CliK over the next few years, our aggregated data diagnostics will become increasingly powerful for triangulating engineering data. education, analysis and trading for powerful insights like no other. We look forward to helping our student body speak up, speak out, and join the narrative,” added Mike Richardson.
