Rise in online shopping in Louth drives more local businesses online

Businesses in Louth have built websites and online shops in direct response to the lockdown economy, with new figures showing that businesses, organisations, clubs and individuals across the county have registered 1,266 new domains .ie in 2021.

The numbers come from .IE, the national registry for .ie domain names. The 2021 .IE Domain Profile Report, which explores and analyzes the .ie database, shows that 36,875 new .ie domains were registered in Leinster and 57,530 on the island of Ireland, making 2021 the second best year ever for new .ie domain registrations.

The 1,266 new .ie domains registered in Louth represent a 16.8% increase from 2019 before the pandemic.

According to the report, for most of the past year, the rate of new .ie domain registrations largely reflected the government’s lockdown policy.

“During the months of 2021, when Ireland was in strict lockdown and non-essential retail businesses were closed, new .ie domain registrations increased,” said David Curtin, chief executive of .IE.

“Louth businesses are investing in new websites, integrating e-commerce technology and using productivity-enhancing tools throughout the year as they now recognize the huge role they play in profitability. and customer acquisition,” he continued.

However, .IE says the pandemic’s link to new .ie domain registrations appeared to “uncouple” in August, as .ie domain registrations rose again despite accelerated government reopening plans.

“We believe this decoupling happened when it did because the Irish economy has, for the most part, come out of the ‘acute response’ phase of the pandemic,” Mr Curtin said. “Companies have factored the uncertainty of restrictions and reduced business capacity into their business operations and planning.

He continued: “SMBs are no longer just reacting to the pandemic. On the contrary, consumer behavior is changing, and SMEs are changing with it.

“Businesses in Louth and across Ireland are investing in new websites, integrating e-commerce technology and using productivity enhancement tools throughout the year as they now recognize the huge role ‘they play in profitability and customer acquisition.”
