“This is the first red flag”

A TikTok user says she fell victim to what she describes as the “most common” scam on Poshmark, a popular reselling app.

Blair Waverly (@BlairWaverly) said she came across a gray Chanel flap bag listed at $480. It’s unclear how much the specific handbag Waverly was trying to buy costs, but given that similar styles are around $8,000 and smaller clutches are $3,400, it seemed too good to be true – d especially since Waverly said she offered $400 and was accepted.

“You might be thinking, ‘This is the first red flag,'” Waverly posted on TikTok. “But I actually bought a couple of Chanel bags on Poshmark – authenticated – for $300.”

In the on-screen text, Waverly warned others to be “beware” of Poshmark’s authentication process and items listed as “authenticated” on the site.

Waverly also said it checked that the seller’s profile looked legit and also had few other listings available.

“Sometimes people get rid of their shit for less than they should,” she said.

Waverly explained that she tracked delivery updates for her package and was home when the USPS announced the bag was on the way. She said she even met her postman and asked him about the package when he was just delivering the mail to her.

“Then the tracking update says, ‘Your package has been delivered,'” Waverly continued. “At this point, I’m digging a little deeper [and] I was able to find the list they stole the photos [of the Chanel bag] from.”

Waverly shared the original listing and said the real owner was trying to resell the handbag for $2,999.

“[Poshmark] said, basically, if my package is stolen or lost, it’s not their problem,” Waverly said, referring to an email Poshmark support sent her after she reported what she thought was a scam. “I must immediately file a report with the USPS.”

Then Waverly went to her local post office and employees discovered that the person who scanned the package and marked it “delivered” had gone to the wrong address. But, according to Waverly, post office workers said the system knew it was supposed to go to Waverly’s address.

Employees then showed Waverly a scan of the package with the wrong address to prove the delivery driver didn’t know he was dropping it off at the wrong place. Waverly drove to the wrong address – which she said was a mile from her home – and asked residents if they had received a package addressed to her.

“They did,” she said. “It was open and empty, but this package was literally so small there was never a bag in it. It was definitely not a Chanel flap.

Next, Waverly explained how the scam works.

“The scammer took my shipping label, downloaded it, photoshopped an address near me for the shipment to more or less track,” she said. “The postman scanned the package and it was supposed to go to my house, but then he looked at the address.”

Waverly speculated that the delivery driver then took it to the second address, perhaps assuming the scanner made a mistake.

“[The seller] was hoping — which almost worked — that I would assume my package was stolen from my mailbox,” Waverly continued. “If I hadn’t been home, that was a reasonable assumption.”

A Poshmark spokesperson told In The Know that “this type of user abuse is currently rare.”

“Preserving the trust and security of our market is our top priority [and] we are aware of this issue,” the spokesperson wrote. “We are actively working to detect and prevent this from happening. Affected users are encouraged to contact Poshmark Customer Support to report any suspected user abuse so that we can help resolve the situation.

Waverly said she then compiled her findings and informed Poshmark, who then reimbursed her.

“But if I hadn’t done all that, I really think [Poshmark] would have just stuck to their guns on like, ‘Parcel stolen! Sorry! It’s not our problem! “, she concluded.

In a comment, Waverly said that in addition to getting their money back, “the seller[‘s profile] has been deleted.
